People will tell you not to come in summer. What they mean is: do not come in summer and behave as if it were spring.
The temperature, plainly
Forty to forty-five in the afternoon, regularly. Nights drop to around twenty-five, which is warm but liveable. It is dry heat, which is genuinely more bearable than humid heat, but it is not a small thing and it does not care how much water you drink.
Invert the day
This is the whole trick, and it is what people who live here do.
- 07:00–10:30 — out. This is the good part of the day, and the medina at eight in the morning belongs to the people who live in it: deliveries, bread ovens, children going to school. It is the version of Marrakech that the ten o’clock coach crowd never sees.
- 11:00–17:00 — in. Pool, shade, lunch, a long sleep. Not a compromise; it is what the afternoon is for.
- 18:00 onwards — out again, and stay out. Dinner at nine, a terrace at eleven.
Fighting this and walking the souks at two in the afternoon is how people end their trip unwell.
The house matters more than in any other season
In July the pool is not a feature, it is the reason the stay works. So is air conditioning in the bedrooms specifically, not just the living room.
A medina riad without a pool is hard work in August. The courtyard stays cooler than the street, but “cooler” is a relative word at forty-three degrees. If you want the medina in summer, look for a riad with a plunge pool and a terrace that gets shade.
Where it is cooler
- The Ourika valley — an hour away, water, shade, several degrees cooler
- Imlil and the Atlas — an hour and a half, and properly cool at 1,700 metres
- Essaouira — three hours, Atlantic, windy, and routinely fifteen degrees below Marrakech
Any of these makes a good escape day in the middle of a summer week.
What you get in return
Empty monuments. Gardens you have to yourself. Restaurants that have tables. And the city in the early morning and late evening, which is when it is at its best anyway.
