A week in Marrakech for twelve people: how it actually runs

Group trips fail on logistics, not on the destination. This is the shape of a week that works for a dozen people — where the friction sits, and what to decide before anyone lands.

A week in Marrakech for twelve people: how it actually runs

A dozen people, one villa, seven days. On paper it is simple. In practice the difference between a good week and an exhausting one comes down to about five decisions, all of which are easier to make before you arrive.

Arrivals are the first test

Twelve people rarely land together. The instinct is to save money with one vehicle doing several runs; the result is somebody sitting in the airport for ninety minutes after a four-hour flight, which sets a tone.

Decide in advance: a vehicle per arrival, or a clear plan for who waits and where.

Day one belongs to the house

The mistake is booking something for the first afternoon. People want to swim, unpack, sleep, and work out where the kettle is. Give them that. Anything scheduled on arrival day gets moved or resented.

The rhythm that works

Roughly: one thing per day, in the morning or the late afternoon, never both.

  • Medina and souks — go early, before ten
  • A day out — Atlas, Ourika or Agafay, and give it the whole day
  • A hammam afternoon — better booked as a group slot in advance
  • Two days with nothing planned at all

Twelve people move slowly. The gap between “shall we go into town” and everyone being in a car is forty minutes on a good day. Planning two activities in one day means the second one becomes a rush.

Eat at the house more than you expect

Dinner out for twelve is two cars, a booking confirmed three days ahead, a walk through dark lanes and a negotiation about leaving. Some evenings that is worth it. Most are not.

A cook at the villa turns dinner into the easiest part of the day, and the table runs as long as people want it to. Most groups work this out by the third night; the ones who plan for it from the start have a better week.

Decide the money thing before you land

Who pays for what, and how it is settled. A kitty, one person’s card, a split at the end — any of them works. None of them works if it is still being discussed on day four.

The one thing to spend on

A car on standby rather than on call. Not a luxury: it is the thing that removes the daily half-hour of coordination, and with twelve people that half-hour happens every single time.
