Marrakech sits inland, at the edge of a plain, with the Atlas Mountains on one side and desert beyond. That geography drives the whole year: dry, big swings between day and night, and a summer that is hotter than most visitors expect.
Spring: March, April, May
The best all-round window. Days are warm without being punishing, the gardens are in flower, and the mountains are still capped with snow, which makes the drive towards the Atlas spectacular. This is also the busiest and most expensive stretch alongside autumn, so villas and riads book early.
Summer: June, July, August
Hot, and honestly so. Temperatures above 38 °C are routine in July and August and can climb higher. The Medina is difficult in the middle of the day. Summer works well if:
- You are staying somewhere with a pool and shade
- You plan mornings and evenings only, with a long break at midday
- You are heading to the coast or the mountains for part of the trip
It is also the quietest season for visitors, which means better availability and a calmer city.
Autumn: September, October, November
The other excellent window. September still carries summer heat but softens quickly; October and November are close to perfect. Evenings begin to cool, so bring a layer for rooftop dinners.
Winter: December, January, February
Days are mild and often beautifully clear, usually in the high teens to around 20 °C. Nights are cold — riads with thick walls hold the chill, so check that your accommodation actually heats the rooms rather than offering a blanket. This is the season for the mountains: Oukaïmeden gets snow, and the Atlas drive is at its best.
What to check before you fix dates
- Ramadan — the dates move earlier by roughly eleven days each year, so check for your travel year. The city stays open to visitors, but rhythms change: quieter days, lively evenings, and some restaurants adjusting their hours.
- School holidays — European half-terms and Easter fill villas fast.
- Local events — festivals and marathons can absorb large parts of the city’s accommodation.
The short version
If you want to walk the city: April, May, October, November. If you want a pool and quiet: July and August. If you want mountains and clear light: January and February.
Common questions
What is the hottest month in Marrakech?
July and August are the hottest, regularly above 38 u00b0C during the day, with the heat easing only after sunset.
Does it rain in Marrakech?
Rarely, and mostly between November and March. Rain tends to arrive as short heavy bursts rather than as steady drizzle, and it rarely lasts long enough to change a trip.
Is Marrakech cold in winter?
Days are mild, often high teens to around 20 u00b0C, but nights get genuinely cold. Traditional riads are built to stay cool, so confirm the rooms have working heating before you book for December to February.
Can you visit Marrakech during Ramadan?
Yes. Hotels, riads and tourist sites operate normally and the evenings are lively. Expect a quieter daytime city, some restaurants on adjusted hours, and eat or drink discreetly in public out of courtesy.
