The road
It is one of the easier drives in Morocco. A single main road most of the way, open country, argan trees, and the temperature dropping as you approach the Atlantic. Two and a half hours if the road is clear, closer to three with a stop.
The stop people usually make is at one of the argan cooperatives along the route. Some are genuine women’s cooperatives; some are shops that use the word. If it matters to you, ask your driver to take you to one that is actually a cooperative, and expect to be shown the process rather than just the till.
Day trip or overnight
As a day trip it is doable and a lot of people do it. Leave at eight, arrive around eleven, have until four or five, home for dinner. What you get is the ramparts, the port, lunch, and a walk through the medina.
What you miss is the evening, which is when Essaouira is at its best and at its emptiest. The day-trip coaches leave around five and the town exhales.
If you have the night, take it. If you do not, go anyway — but go early, because leaving Marrakech at ten turns a long day into a rushed one.
What it is like when you arrive
Essaouira is walled, low, white and blue, and considerably windier than Marrakech. That wind is why it is a kitesurfing town and why it is fifteen degrees cooler in August, which in high summer is reason enough to make the trip.
Cars do not go into the medina here either. You are dropped at a gate and walk.
Practical
- Take a layer. People leave Marrakech in thirty degrees and arrive on a windy Atlantic seafront in seventeen.
- Agree the return time before you set off, and agree where you will be collected. The gates look similar and phone signal in the medina is patchy.
- Eat fish at the port, but look at it first. The grills by the harbour are a real thing and prices are agreed before, not after.
- It is a long day for the driver too. Six hours of driving plus waiting. This is normally priced as a route rather than as a standard day.
EliteRak arranges the Essaouira run as a day return or as a one-way transfer if you are moving on rather than coming back.
Common questions
How long does Marrakech to Essaouira take?
Two and a half to three hours each way, about 175 kilometres on a single main road. Add time for a stop, which most people make.
Is Essaouira worth a day trip?
Yes, but understand the shape of it: five to six hours in a car for four or five on the coast. Leaving early makes the difference between a good day and a rushed one.
Is it colder than Marrakech?
Noticeably. It is on the Atlantic and it is windy, so it can be ten to fifteen degrees cooler in summer. Take a layer even in August.
Can the car drive into Essaouira medina?
No. You are dropped at a gate and walk in, the same as Marrakech. Agree the collection point before you separate from the driver.
