Nightclubs in Marrakech: what a night out is like

The clubs are in the Hivernage and along the Palmeraie road, they run from about one in the morning until four or five, and most operate on tables rather than a dance floor with a bar. Entry is often easier and cheaper if the venue knows you are coming.

The table system

This is the part that surprises people. In most Marrakech clubs the room is built around tables, not around a bar you stand at. You reserve a table, there is a minimum spend attached to it, and the bottles come to you.

Arriving as a group of six with no reservation, hoping to stand somewhere, is the version of the evening that goes badly. Either you are not admitted, or you are admitted and find there is nowhere to be.

Timing

The door opens far earlier than the room fills. Before one in the morning you are in an empty club paying full price for the privilege. From one to two it fills, and it runs until four or five.

Work backwards from that: dinner at nine, a bar at eleven, the club after midnight.

Getting in

Door policy is real but not mysterious. What helps:

  • Being expected. A booked table removes the question entirely.
  • Group balance. Six men with no reservation is the hardest arrival at any club anywhere, and Marrakech is no exception.
  • Dress. Smart. Closed shoes, no shorts, no beachwear. The city is relaxed; the doors are not.

Money

Bring cash as well as a card. Card machines fail, minimum spends are quoted in dirhams and settled at the table, and cash resolves most friction at the door and the cloakroom.

Agree the minimum spend when you book, not when the first bottle arrives.

Getting home

The clubs are out of the centre and taxis thin out sharply after two. A driver who waits is the standard solution for a group and costs less than the argument at four in the morning.

If clubs are not your thing

There is a lot of night between dinner and a club: hotel bars, lounges with live music, rooftop bars that run late in summer. A slower evening in Gueliz is easier to arrange and easier to leave.

EliteRak books tables and arranges the car both ways. Being expected at the door is most of what makes the night work.

Common questions

Do I need to book a table at a Marrakech club?

In practice yes. Most venues are built around reserved tables with a minimum spend rather than a standing bar, and arriving without one often means not getting in.

What time should I arrive?

After one in the morning. Clubs open earlier but do not fill before then, and arriving at midnight means an empty room at full price.

Is there a dress code?

Smart. Closed shoes, no shorts or beachwear. The city is relaxed during the day but club doors are not.

How do I get back?

Arrange it before you go. The clubs are out of the centre and taxis become scarce after two, so a driver who waits is the normal solution for a group.
