Concrete, stone and water
The structure is board-marked concrete, left as it came out of the formwork, set against floors and terraces of honed local limestone. A water channel about forty centimetres wide runs from the entrance through the courtyard and out to the pool, which is the only thing in the house that moves or makes a noise. Nothing is carved, nothing is patterned. The effect is cooler and quieter than photographs suggest, and it depends entirely on the light doing the decorating.
Six bedrooms, two wings
Twelve guests across six bedrooms, each with a bathroom, split between two wings either side of the courtyard. Three bedrooms sit at ground level with direct access to the garden; three are above, reached by a stone stair with no handrail on the courtyard side — worth knowing if you are travelling with small children. The living room runs double height between them.
What it asks of you
A house like this rewards restraint. It looks its best with the group’s things put away, which is one reason daily housekeeping is normally part of how these properties run. Cooking is settled separately from the house, and in a plan built around one long table it tends to be settled early.

The area
Amelkis is a low-density golf estate on the south-eastern edge of Marrakech, built along the Ouarzazate road with generous plots, tarmac in good condition and a lot of watered green. Its appeal is privacy: high hedges, no through traffic, and no passing footfall. The trade-off is that it is a driving suburb — the medina is about fifteen minutes away, and everything else is a car journey too.
What the photos won't tell you
Every listing in the world photographs the pool from its best corner, and no photograph answers the questions that decide a stay. So before you commit, we put the following in writing for your dates:
- How far the car gets, and how many metres and steps remain with the luggage.
- Who the neighbours are, and what you will hear at five in the morning.
- Whether the pool is heated, and in which months that decides whether you swim.
- What “staffed” covers — who is there, at what hours, and who cooks.
- Where the wifi actually reaches, not just where the router is.
- Which of the property’s own photographs were taken with a wide-angle lens, and what a room looks like from the doorway.
Common questions
How many guests can Amelkis Contemporary Villa sleep?
Twelve, in six bedrooms with a bathroom each, arranged three down and three up across two wings. Because the wings sit either side of a courtyard, two families or two groups can share the house without living in each other's pockets.
Is the villa suitable for young children?
Less so than a conventional house. There are hard edges, a stone stair without a handrail on the courtyard side, and an open water channel at floor level. None of it is insurmountable, but it needs discussing rather than discovering on arrival.
How long is the pool?
Roughly twenty metres by four, which is a lap pool rather than a lounging one. With twelve people in the house that shape works better than a square: someone can swim lengths at one end while the rest sit at the other.
Can a house like this hold a private dinner or celebration?
Sometimes, and it depends on the property rather than the area. What a given house permits — numbers, music, hours — is set by the owner and by estate rules, so it is a question to settle before booking rather than after.
