Family villa with garden and pool

For families the priorities invert: the pool, the garden and where the bedrooms sit matter more than the architecture. Typically three to six bedrooms grouped together, an enclosed garden, a pool with shallow-end access, and enough shade to get through the middle of the day.

What actually matters with children

Not the design. Whether the garden is enclosed, whether the pool has steps rather than a ladder, whether the bedrooms are close enough that you can hear a child at night, and whether there is shade over the terrace at two in the afternoon. Those four decide the holiday.

Pool safety, said plainly

Most Marrakech villa pools are unfenced, and many have a sharp edge straight into deep water. Some properties can add a temporary fence or a safety net with notice; many cannot. If you have a child who cannot swim, this is a question to ask before you look at photographs.

The rhythm of the day

Marrakech is hot for most of the year and children tire quickly in the souks. Families who enjoy the trip tend to do one thing in the morning, come back for lunch and the pool, and go out again after five. A villa makes that rhythm possible; a riad in the medina makes it harder.

Practical things worth confirming

Cots and high chairs are often available but rarely automatic. A cook who will make plain food alongside the tagine matters more than a tasting menu. And a washing machine you may actually use is worth more than a hammam.

What varies most between properties

Pool safety provision above all — fence, net, alarm or nothing. Then bedroom grouping: whether the children can sleep near you or are down a separate wing. Then the practical layer: cots, high chairs, a usable kitchen, and whether the cook is willing to cook for children rather than only for adults.

What people most often get wrong

Choosing on the photographs. A villa that photographs beautifully often has the pool edge flush with the terrace and the family bedrooms at opposite ends of the house, which are exactly the two things that make a week with small children harder. Ask for a floor plan and a photograph of the pool edge.

Common questions

Are villa pools in Marrakech fenced?

Usually not. Many have an edge flush with the terrace and drop straight to depth. Some properties can install a temporary fence or net with notice, but it needs arranging in advance and not every villa can do it.

Can villas provide cots and high chairs?

Often, but rarely automatically. Ask when you enquire rather than on arrival, and confirm how many of each, because a property may have one of something for a family of five.

Is Marrakech too hot for young children?

July and August are hard work with small children. Spring and autumn are comfortable, and winter days are mild. Whatever the season, a villa with shade and a pool makes the middle of the day manageable.
